GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

For Giving Tuesday 2021, EnRoute has compiled five suggestions for gap year allies to consider donating to this holiday season. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

If you want to contribute to expanding the gap year option to as many people as possible, consider donating to GYA, the nonprofit governing association of the gap year industry. GYA uses donations to fund research, deliver high-quality professional development and ensure programs in the gap year space are providing high-quality, risk-assessed, accessible programming to students around the world.

If you are interested in earmarking a donation to be used as a scholarship, please email

Carpe Mundi is a non-profit organization that provides low-income, first-generation Portland college students with a year-long mentorship and scholarship program that includes an experiential education study abroad/gap year program.

Carpe Mundi staff provide a holistic support network to students before and after travel: navigating academic and travel logistics, applying for scholarships, learning academic success tactics and feeling emotionally supported. Listen to Gap Year Radio podcast episode featuring Carpe Mundi alum Vanesia here.

If you care about expanding access to the gap year option, this is a great place to donate!

Our over 400 national parks preserve 85 million acres of the world’s most treasured landscapes, ecosystems, and historical sites. Your gift will help the National Park Foundation protect these treasured landscapes for generations to come.

If the outdoors is your jam, give these folks some dough!

Wild Diversity helps to create a personal connection to the outdoors for Black, Indigenous, all People of Color (BIPOC) & the LGBTQ2S+ communities, through outdoor adventures and education. Your donation helps to support outdoor adventures, day and weekend trips, and workshops for people of color and the LGBTQ+ communities.

If you agree that creating equitable access to the outdoors is a moral imperative, then donate to Wild Diversity!

My good friend William Elisa has started an incredible NGO project near Moshi to help elders age with dignity. He and many other Tanzanians have had a really hard time during the pandemic – rampant job loss and no government support. Will’s project is providing elders with food, hygiene services, a community garden, workshops and more.

If you like support small grassroots efforts where your dollar goes a long way, consider a donation to support their kazi kizuri (good work!).
